nongkong seriously hit by typhoon

hongkong, august 23 chsinhua) a typhoon hit hongkong on august 17 and caused heavy losses to tens of thousands of chinese compatriots here.

preliminary statistics published by the british authorities in hongkong up to the 21st show that in hongkong, kowloon and the new territories more than one hundred

people lost their lives in the typhoon and over three hundred people were injured. several thousand living rooms were destroyed and a number of ships and fishing boats were destroyed or sunk. heavy losses were caused to the standing crops on the outskirts. the most seriously hit were areas of wooden shanties inhabited by the poor.
