LABOUR AND LEGAL AID DEPARTMENTS HELP
Dependants Of Deceased Fatshan Seamen
********
The Labour Department is making special arrangements to help
the dependants of the deceased seamen from the Fat Shan disaster to obtain
compensation for which they may be eligible under the Workmen's Compensation
Ordinance said Mr. David LIN Huo-fu, Assistant Commissioner of Labour today.
"The department" he said, "has already contacted the Shun Tak
Shipping Company, operators of the Fat Shan for more details. The management
is aware of its legal obligations and has been advised on the steps it
should follow."
On the procedure for dealing with fatal cases, he explained that
dependants would be invited to provide information about their relationship
with the deceased. Once this and other relevant documents were ready, the
cases would be immediately referred to the District Court, which determines
the degree of dependency, the amount of compensation payable and its apportion-
ment among the eligible dependants.
In the meantime, the Acting Director of Legal Aid, Mr. T.L. von
Pokorny, has today (Thursday) offered assistance to relatives of the officers
and crew of the S.S. Fatshan who have lost their lives in Typhoon Rose.
He said that should any of them wish to seek legal aid to claim
Workmen's Compensation, they should telephone H-240600 for an appointment
or they may call at the offices of the Department of Legal Aid in the Victoria
District Court Building, Battery Path, Hong Kong.
Release time: 7.00 p.m.
