VISITS TO TYPHOON VICTIMS
Personal Investigations Into Pressing Needs
***
Officers of the Social Welfare Department spent a good part of
the weekend on visits to victims of Typhoon Rose in the most badly-affected
areas of the Colony to express sympathy and look into continuing needs.
Teams were made up of officers representing the Family Services
and Public Assistance divisions.
Their terms of reference were to carry formal help a little further
by injecting a personal note into departmental sympathy and assistance, and
to see what more could be done.
Visits were made to transit camps, estate welfare buildings, community
centres, schools and the premises of kaifong associations where victims are
being temporarily sheltered.
These included facilities at Sam Ka Chuen, Iam Tin, Sau Mau Ping,
Ngau Tau Kok, Wong Tai Sin, Tsz Wan Shan, Tai Po, Yuen Long, Tsuen Wan, Cheung Sha Wan, the Queensway Transit Camp, the Shau Kei Wan Kaifong Association, Wong Chuk Hang, the resite area in Aberdeen, and the craft of boat people in
Aberdeen.
As a direct result of these visits, many more victims of the typhoon were encouraged to register for assistance. A number who did not know of the availability of dry rations and blankets were invited to apply for them.
