Dear bound

I write to let you have copies of

our Information Services' Press Review No 142 about the Defence Contribution;

the speeches made in Legislative Council on the same

subject by Philip Haddon-Cave, P. C. Woo and John Browne; and

(c) the Press Release about it issued immediately after

Legislative Council had met.

Our Hansard record of Wednesday's Legislative Council meeting is not yet ready, so the version of the three speeches now enclosed is not definitive; but certainly it does not vary in any significant way from what was actually said.

The Press Review only covers material which appeared in the newspapers before Legislative Council met. A further Review will be prepared in a few days with comment made afterwards, and I will send you a copy of it. Meanwhile it is fair to say present indications are that (as we hoped) we may now escape without too serious a fuss. But we shall be sending you a telegram early next week, once the position is rather clearer, and as it should arrive at much the time this letter does I will not comment further here

RECEIVED IN

REGISTRY No. 51

TC OCT 1971

Yurs sincerely, Peter Lloyd.

(G. P. Lloyd) Defence Secretary

E.O. Laird, Esq, CMG, OBE,

Foreign and Commonwealth Office, LONDON.
