Thank you very much for your letter of 16th April.
I have looked through the Hong Kong press cuttings of Mr. Heath's visit to the Colony in January 1970 and I cannot find any report that while in Hong Kong he used the figure of £300 million.
But he may
well have done so, for he certainly used it a number of times during that particular Far Eastern tour. As an illustration I
62/k enclose an extract from the Canberra Times
of 5th January 1970.
The figure of £300 million did not purport to include income from Hong Kong, and clearly had no direct relevance to the size of the British garrison.
