Make Chinese official, say students in US
THE Minnesota Hongkong Students' Association has written to the Governor, Sir David Trench, backing the demand for equal status for Chinese and English.
In the letter, dated September 26, the association Jemands the enactment of legislation.

In a General Meeting on October 25 last year, We unanimously supported the enactment of legislation to give Chinese equal status with English. We reiterated this stand together with 24 other Hongkong student organisations in North America in December 1970. Another joint statement of a similiar nature was released in July 1971.

The matter has been dragging on for more than a year. The recognition of Chinese as an Official Language is long overdue.
We fully support the stand of the Hongkong Federation of Students that "legislation be enacted to the effect of declaring both Chinese and English Official Languages of Hongkong, equal in status, with the usage of the Chinese Language defined in specific
areas.
