Mr James Johnson (Kingston-upon-Hull, West): to ask
the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth
Affairs what is the present position regarding the
use of the Chines language in the secondary schools
of Hong Kong; and what changes are contemplated.
DRAFT REPLY:
There are two major types of Secondary School
in Hong Kong: Anglo-Chinese, and Middle Schools.
The former teach all subjects, apart from Chinese
in English; the latter teach all subjects
studies,
except English, in Chinese.

The aim is to amalgamate
progressively the syllabuses and the Hong Kong Certificat
of Education appropriate to each type of school, while
retaining for the present, the existing languages retaining
of
instruction.
