Protest
over UK textile quotas
SIX LEADING Hongkong tex- tile associations indve severely criticised what they said is a British decision to reimpose import quotas on Hongkong cotion woven textiles starting on January 1.
"The decision illustrates the absence of a sense of moral obligation of the British Government towards Hongkong people, and indeed reflects bad faith on her part," the associations said in a joint statement published yes- terday.
The statement said the textile industry received information "from several sources, including Singapore and Great Britain," that quotas would be reimposed on Hongkong's cotton textile exports to Britain.
The statement said that in 1969 the British replaced the quota system by levying a Commonwealth preference tariff averaging 85 per cent of the general tariff on Com- monwealth cotton woven tex- tile imports.
"If the British Government should persist in reintroduc- ing quotas in 1972, We demand the corresponding withdrawal of the new Coni- monwealth preference tariff," the statement said.
