MK calls for UK talks

THE Textile Advisory Board and eight leading textile and industrial associations yesterday cabled the minister of trade and industry in London opposing Britain's move to restrict Hongkong textiles. The message said that Hongkong

textile manufacturers are shocked to learn of the reported moves by Britain to retain quota restrictions on Hongkong's cotton textiles, in addition to а tariff effective on January 1, 1972.

"If these reports are true, we are astonished that the British Government should now proceed in a manner contrary to the many public statements which have been made since Mr Crossland's first announcement of the tariff proposals in 1969.

"We would consider any such move inconsiderate and unreasonable measure by the British Government and a failure by the British Government to appreciate the understanding which Hongkong has always shown of the United Kingdom's problems with cotton textiles.

The message urged Britain to immediately enter into negotiations with Hongkong before any announcement is made.
