Both Ministers expressed their continuing concern

over the situation in the Middle East and agreed that a just and durable peace must be based on the Security Council Resolution 242 of November 1967.

They also discussed Anglo-Japanese economic and commercial relations, expressing satisfaction at the continued expan- sion of trade between the two countries and the wish to further co-operation in projects in third countries. They both also re-affirmed the importance which they attach to the improvenent of their aid performance.

On the question of generalised preferences, Mr Aichi stated that it was the intention of the Japanese Govern- ment to include Hong Kong in the scheme subject to certain restrictions and some delay in application.

The Ministerial consultations were preceded by talks at

official level.

The meetings were frank and cordial and demonstrated once again the friendly relations existing between Britain and Japan. They confirmed the close identity of view on international problems and the determination of the two countries to work together in promoting peace

and stability in the world.

The forthcoming State Visit to Britain from 5 - 8 October this year by Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress was indicative of the ties between the two

countries.

It was agreed that the next round of regular Consultations should take place next year in Tokyo at a date to be agreed upon by both Governments.
