MEETING OF DEPUTIES 23 FEBRUARY
GENERALISED PREFERENCE SCHEME
Late
We shoke: Here in to trace in the record
Hrik
At the meeting on 23 February, I raised the question of our adaptation to the Community's generalised preference scheme. I referred to Hurmel's statement on 30 June "In connection with the new responsibilities of the enlarged Community to which I have just referred, it would also be desirable. for the Six and the Applicant States to consult each other, preferably in the initial stage of the negotiations, with a view to adopting a joint position on the problem of generalised preferences", and to Mr. Rippon's statement on 2 February "The adaptation of the overall scheme of generalised preferences which the UK expects to be operating up to the time of its accession to the scheme then being operated by the Community will of course raise a number of technical problems and I think it would be useful if you could agree that there should be contacts between our experts as to the Lodalities of this adeptation".
2. I added that we hoped the Community would now agree that these contacts should start in the reasonably near future.
3. Boegner replied that it was in fact very possible that the process of adaptation could pose technical problems about which it would be useful to have contacts. The Community accepted our proposal and thought that these contacts should be with the Commission. We could now go ahead and make arrangements to discuss these questions with the Commission.
12 I thanked him for this agreement and said that we would make the necessary arrangements with the Commission.
