Recruitment of Inspectors of Police
A number of enquiries are being received from persons either resident or who have been resident in South Africa and Rhodesia, and with previous experience of Police work in those territories, who are interested in appointment as Inspector of Police in the Royal Hong Kong Police Force. My Commissioner of Police considers that satisfactory service as a Patrol Officer in the British South Africa Police equates with service in a United Kingdom Police Force and, as recruitment in the United Kingdom is currently disappointing, I am accepting applications on this basis, but will only recruit when the candidates hold United Kingdom pass- ports although I understand that this does not necessarily imply United Kingdom citizenship.

In order to explore the South African field satisfactorily, it would be necessary to advertise vacancies in the South African and, if possible, Rhodesian Press. I should be grateful to know whether you or H.B.M. Ambassador in Pretoria would see any objection to this line of action and, if not, whether any objection would be seen to stipulating the possession of a U.K. passport as one of the qualifi- cations for appointment. The other qualifications relate to education, physical fitness and experience, etc.
