I am planning to spend two day in Hong Kong (wi Governor) in the second part of January, immediately after the Commonwealth Prime Ministers' Meeting in Singapore. I do not
want to put anyone to the trouble of writing me special briefs, particularly since my visit will be rather brief and largely aimed at becoming better acquainted with those Hong Kong problems that tend to come my way. But if there is any convenient and preferably short note on Hong Kong and its problems (e.g. prepared for some previous visit there) I should be grateful if I could have a copy.
2. One particular problem on which I hope that you or Commodities Department could brief me before I leave for Singapore (departing London Monday, 11 January) is the question of whether talks about the limitation of textile exports should
be offered to the United States Government. I should also
welcome short notes on the various outstanding points from the recent economic talks with the Governor and his officials.
3. I have written to the senior British Trade Commissioner to say that I would welcome an opportunity of hearing about his export promotion problems in Hong Kong. I should be grateful if you could let me have a note on these points before I go
from DTI if that is more appropriate.
