5.

As you know action is continuing on the lines agreed during the informal discussion on the US Trade Bill and US/Japanese textile talks in your room on 25 November.

CRE in DTI are preparing short briefs on (i) the Hong Kong economy, (ii) Hong Kong/UK Trade Summary, (iii) the Trade Commission and the BNEC (this will deal with export promotion problems) and (iv) as an aide memoire - the position regarding exports of textiles from Hong Kong to ourselves, the EEC and the USA. The BNEC has no organisation of its own in Hong Kong. The BNEC Hong Kong Advisory Group in the UK deals with Mr. Blackwell through CRE II of DTI.

6. Some notes on prominent Hong Kong personalities are also attached. Lt.Gen. Sir Basil Eugster has recently left the Colony and been replaced by Lt. Gen. Ward (who, I see, got his knighthood in the New Year's Honours List).
