The BBC gave financial and technical assistance
to equip a studio for recording the Thai Service
live and making tapes for distribution of this,
plus tapes of other material, to Thai broadcasting
stations, We consider that this activity should
continue in the new premises now being planned.
The Thai Service has a useful spin-off in Laos,
where its news and current affairs programmes are
monitored and used as a news source.
(iv) Overall assessment
Our information objectives in Thailand are to
promote British exports and to present Britain
as a force contributing to stability in South
East Asia. The Inspectors had wished to
recommend that the Grade 6 post should be
abolished and that Information activities should
be supervised by a Grade 7 or possibly even a
Grade 8 officer sitting in Chancery. We have
reserved our position on this.
