Sir Leslie Monson
Mr ilford (separate copy with encs)
MR AWOLFHOSE
1. A copy of Mr MucLehose's programme for 3-4 May is attached together with copies of his letter to me of 6 April and of my reply to him of 15 April.
2.
As you will see, är Maclchuse wants to discuss with us the whole of his programne up to the time he leaves for long Kong. In so far as we shall od an agenda for the weeting kext Tominy dlr 1 konson may wish to pick up the following points:-
1. It will be helpfa 12 Mr Maciehose can bring us up to date on his thinking; in particular we shall need to know what arrangements he has made with those he neats on Fonday 3rd and Tuceday 4th before he comes to the PCO. I am attaching a list of the kind of subjects with which we think Mr Muglichose will have to become familiar. Some of these could usefully be «iscussed with both Mr #acleho se and ir D Trench during the period between 9 and 21 June. If Yr Jachehoso is thinking of getting through all the confidential briefs from Hong Kong as well as the files here which we think he sho to see during that fortnight I fear he may be giving himself an unnecessarily unpleasant tipo.
Apart from anything 1lse we shall went to take advantage of Sir D Tranch's presence to discuas the se netters on which we ust bave the preeent Governor's viuwe. I sagt st therefore that it will probably ce setter to extend this part of the progremme by about a week.
2. It will also be useful to have Mr Maciehose's views on the people he would like to see (1) in the Go and (11) in other departments. Suggestions are attached.
3.
Visits abroad. In on earlier letter (to ir L Houson of 5 March) Mr Hucinhose talked about visite to "Cingapore, Japan or even South America". He would cluerly like to know what we think about this.
4.
