In Michael Laird's absence on leave I am replying to your letter to him of 28 July about the possibility of a visit to Hong Kong by Princess Alexandra next spring.

Before we make an approach to Kensington Palace it would be helpful to know more precisely the dates WHICH When you would like to suggest for her visit to Hong Kong and the length of the visit you would like to suggest she should make. I am sorry that we omitted to make this clear earlier. It would be as well if we were to offer, say three specific sets of dates as alternatives. April would appear to offer a clear run (apart from the Queen's Birthday) and we might perhaps offer two sets of dates during that month with a third at the end of March or during May. However, this is for you to decide.

We are of course, aware that the main reason for the visit is connected with H.R.H.'s appointment as Commandant General of the Royal Hong Kong Police Force.
