Mr Laird

The following is a verbatim extract from the record of the Secretary of State's press conference in Hong Kong on 19 April, 1970:

2.

"Mr. Len Port (Radio Hong Kong):

Sir, can you give us any indication when

Hong Kong will know who the next Governor will be

to be announced

election?

Mr. Stewart

...

Now, you tell me when the next election in

Britain is going to be ... but ... or seriously, this is not a decision that we shall delay for long, and I do understand that there is a general feeling here that you do want to know what our decision is going to be, and you don't want to be kept waiting very long for it. So, I think I may safely chance thereon and say it would be before the British General Election."

News Department received a telephone call from Hong Kong yesterday evening enquiring whether now that the date for the General Election has been fixed for 18 June, an announcement regarding the Governorship will be made before that date. The reply given by News Department was that they had no further information on the subject at this stage.

3. I do not know what the intentions are as regards any announcement on the Governorship but I thought that you would wish to be aware of the above information.
