Extension of term of office of Sir David Trench
(Wilford/Land)
wel
I telephoned Miss Booker after we spoke yesterday afternoon.
She told me that the announcement about the extension of
Sir David Trench's term of office attracted little interest. There was a question about how long Sir D. Trench had been Governor and what the "normal term of office" for a Governor was. The answer to the second part of that question was to the effect that Governors of Hong Kong had served for varying periods of time. This is certainly true (Sir Robert Black served from 1958-1964 and his predecessor, Sir Alexander Grantham, from 1947-1958).
3. The only other question was about other candidates was there not somebody else who could have done the job equally well or perhaps better? The reply followed the notes we had prepared, and the opportunity was taken to say that the Secretary of State was grateful to Sir David Trench for agreeing to the extension of his term of office.
