Following today's announcement, the Governor said tonight that
he was naturally very happy indeed to continue to serve Hong Kong for
an extra year, since it seemed he was still needed for a period until
a successor could be appointed.
"I am indeed extremely grateful" he said, "for all the friendly
help and support I have had from very many people during the past six
years and more, and I hope I shall be able to continue to enjoy the same
support for this further year. I for my part will certainly do all I
possibly can to keep Hong Kong stable and prosperous, and continuing
to make the same steady progress towards a better life for all our
people."
