In your letter of 14 July you conveyed the Prime Minister's agreement to the appointment of Mr. MacLehose to the Governorship of Hong Kong.

You may like to know that the Foreign and Commonwealth Secretary has decided that the announcement of this appointment should be made when Sir David Trench leaves Hong Kong on 17 October to come on leavo, This will avoid speculation in Hong Kong and make it easier to carry out consultations with the Executive Council. MacLehose will inform the Danish Government in advance of the announcement, probably at the beginning of October.

P. J. S. Moon, Esq.,

10 Downing Street.
