Official announcement appointment of Crawford Murray Maclehose as Hong Kong next Governor was warmly welcomed in Colony today. News received front page treatment in all papers. Opinion was almost unanimous that choice of Maclehose
was good one because of his experience in Hong Kong affairs. Announcement came as no surprise following days of speculation after London "leak" yet wide cross section of public reacted favourably to news and prominent bankers, industrialists and leading citizens all said they were pleased. Typical comment was that of Saunders Chairman and Chief Manager of Hong Kong Shanghai Banking Corporation. He said "I knew Maclehose when
he was Political Adviser to Hong Kong Government between 1959
and 1962. He is a very able man". Others said since Governor designate combined among his qualities that of politican, diplomat and colonial servant this choice of person from Britain Diplomatic Service was desirable for Hong Kong future. An Urban Councillor commented " This is because as Hong Kong economy grows it becomes involved in international economic affairs to greater extent and this wider experience of a diplomat will be of value to use".
