American involvement in Vietnam and was prepared to organise and participate
in demonstrations even though he must have been intelligent enough to
realise that any demonstration in Hong Kong, no matter how peaceable its
intentions, could spark off violence. He also, on more than one occasion,
tried to encourage students to take more positive action to air their
grievances and by contributing to a radical student publication he has
indicated his support for the extremist views which this particular
journal advocates. He undoubtedly favours student extremism as a method
of obtaining results even if he himself is not prepared to participate
in extremist activities on the ground.
