INTRODUCTION

The Foreign and Commonwealth Secretary was invited to visit Japan for the annual exchange of views with the Japanese Government and to represent The Queen at the British Day on 22 April, at Expo. '70. On the way to Tokyo Mr. and Mrs. Stewart, accompanied by their advisers, spent a weekend in Hong Kong. This was the first visit by a Foreign and Commonwealth Secretary, also responsible for the Dependent Territories, to Hong Kong.

The party left London airport by scheduled BOAC flight on Thursday, 16 April, and arrived in Hong Kong on 17 April.

Mr. and Mrs. Stewart spent one day resting at the Governor's country residence at Fanling and one day in Hong Kong, during which Mr. Stewart had talks with the official and unofficial members of the Executive and Legislative Councils and also held a Press conference.

Mrs. Stewart visited one of the hospitals of the colony.

The party left for Tokyo on Sunday afternoon, 19 April, by scheduled BOAC flight.
