Proposed Visit to Far East by Defence Minister
The Ministry of Defence has asked for the Secre-
tary of State's approval for a visit to Singapore, Malaysia
and Hong Kong by Mr. Ivor Richard, Parliamentary Under-
Secretary of State for Defence for the Army, between 25 May
and 7 June. The purpose of the proposed visit is a famil-
iarisation tour of our Far East forces, including a visit to
the Jungle Warfare School in Malaysia and to units of our
forces training for the Bersatu Padu exercise. Arrangements
are being made by CINCFE for Mr. Richard to stay with the
Commander FARELF in Singapore the Commander of British
Forces in Hong Kong. He also intends to spend one night in
Bangkok. The proposal has the approval of the Secretary of
State for Defence.

that the dates proposed present no local difficulties. I
attach a draft reply from Mr. Barrington to the MOD.
