I have been considering the suggestion in your minute to me
of 28th April that I should fit in a couple of days in Hong Kong
after travelling to Tokyo on BOAC's Trans-Siberian inaugural early
in June.
2. I fully agree with you that it is important that we should
demonstrate our interest in and concern with the problems of Hong
Kong, and other things being equal I would certainly be willing
to take this opportunity of making a visit there. Unfortunately,
however, I shall be very pressed for time on this occasion.
Commitments in the House will necessitate my being back in London
on the morning of June 9th at the latest and given that I shall be
spending some time both in Tokyo and in Osaka, I cannot see that a
visit to Hong Kong could practically be fitted into my programme.
3. I shall of course bear your suggestion in mind in planning
my future programme, and it may well be that I shall be able to
visit Hong Kong a little later in the year perhaps with one or
two other countries which I did not include in my Far East tour in
January.
