Mr. Royle discussed with me this afternoon the possibilities
of (i) a visit by himself, accompanied by me to Hong Kong in early
October and (ii) a reconnaissance visit by Mr. Laird, as soon as was
conva.ient, which would prepare the way for his subsequent visit.
(Mr. Laird ought to have a familiarization visit to Hong Kong soon
in any event).

I have discussed these arrangements further with Mr. Laird
and suggest we work on the following basis:
(1)
Mr. Royle's visit should be in the week beginning
Sunday, 11 October (fir David Trench's leave starts
on 17 October.)

I plan to return from leave on 8 October and could
catch up with Fr. Royle in Bangkok so as to arrive
with him in Hong Kong on 11th or 12th.
(3) lir. Laird could not leave at the end of this month
as Mr. Wilford is away and I chall be accompanying
Mr. Codber on a visit to Washington and Bermuda, etc.
from which I am not likely to be back until the
week ending 8/9 August. Mr. Laird will then be on
leave returning on 24 August. But a visit to Hong Kong
by him in the first fortnight of September ought to
fit in with the plans in the preceding paragraph.

I told Mr. Royle thrt Mr. Godber (as I understood)
hoped to be in Australia in the carly part of
October and that it would be necessary to consider
the position about Ministerial visits at the P.U.S's
Ministerial Visits Committee on 23 July. (I take it
that you will be notifying the Comittee of Mr. Royle's
plans to visit the Far East generally.
