The following is the position on proposed visits to or from
countries with which South-East Asian Department is concerned.
Outward Visits
Не
2. Mr. Royle wishes to plan a visit to Hong Kong, Thailand,
Cambodia and Indonesia in late September or early October. proposes to spend about a week in Thailand and two days in Cambodia. 3. A visit to Thailand would reaffirm the continued British interest
in that country and help along the present cordial relationship. If British commercial interests suffer unduly as a result of the recent sharp tariff increases, the occasion might be taken to ask the Thais to consider changing the basis of calculation from c.i.f. to f.o.b. valuation; I am not optimistic that they would agree to this but it would be worth trying. By September the position about,
a Royal Visit will be known.
4. A visit to Cambodia would hearten both the Embassy staff, who have been under considerable stress, and the Cambodian Government, who would be delighted at this gesture (it would please the
Americans too).
