The following is the position on proposed visits to or from

countries with which South East Asia Department is concerned.

Outward Visits

The Prime Minister has approved Mr. Royle's proposed visit to

Hong Kong, Thailand and Cambodia, and also that Mrs. Royle should

accompany him at public expense, since she has been officially invited

by the Thai Government, and her visit will help the morale of Embussy

wives in Phnom Penh. The proposed itinerary is given in Tel. no. 551

to Hong Kong and the reactions of the posts concerned are summari sod in

your minute of 28 August.

Mr. Royle has subsequently confirmed that he is proceeding with

the visits as planned for 9-22 October and that he will be unable to

go to Manila at the beginning of December to lead the U.K. delegation.

of Lord Lothian taking this on is being explored.

4. Mr. Ian Gilmour, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the

Army, Ministry of Defence, will be paying a brief private visit to

Bangkok on 11-12 September as a break between his official visits to

the British forces in Hongkong and Singapore.

The Embassy in

Bangkok are making necessary arrangements in accordance with

Mr. Gilmour's wishes.
