BACKGROUND NOTE
KAI TAK AIRPORT, HONG KONG
APPLICATION BY HONG KONG GOVERNMENT FOR ASSISTANCE
WITH FINANCING OF IMPROVEMENTS
The Project
The Hong Kong Government has plans to extend the runway at
Kai Tak Airport by 2,500 feet (from the present 8650 feet to 11,150 feet) and to expand and improve other facilities (Apron
parking area, terminal building, cargo handling complex, air traffic control system).
2. The purpose of these improvements is to enable the Airport :-
(a) to cope with the fast increasing passenger and cargo

traffic - it is forecast that over the next ten years scheduled air movements will increase by some 12% per
annum, passenger traffic by 17% p.a. and air cargo traffic
by 30% per annum;
to meet the increasing requirements of the present generation of aircraft (the existing long-range jet
aircraft operate under a payload penalty), and also the
requirements of the new generation:
and SST (e.g. Concorde)

jumbo-jet (Boeing 747)
to provide a more adequate margin of safety during
operations in adverse weather conditions: present runway
lengths are critically short under such conditions.
The total estimated cost of the improvements is £13.7 million
made up as follows:-
