This matter has/been the subject of prolonged
Protracted
inter-departmental consultations stretching over a
period of months and we had hoped that it might prove
possible to meet your request for financial assistance
even if only to a limited extent. It is regretted,
however, that in present circumstances we can hold out
no hope of such assistance from HMG towards the costs
of the project.
2. This does not necessarily rule out any possibility
of such assistance in the future should the general
financial and economic situation of Her Majesty's
Government make this possible. But for the purpose
of reaching your decision on whether to go ahead with
the scheme the position is as stated in paragraph 1
above.
