In its latest issue, magazine said: "For the rest of the developing Common- wealth countries, the EEC Commission has proposed 'global trade agreements'.

"There is no indication that any of them want more than this.

"There will probably, how- ever, be difficulties over Hongkong, which alone of Britain's dependencies has a major industrial exporting economy."

Opposition

Observers interpret the magazine's warning as in- dicating that the Common Market countries will oppose most of Britain's moves help Hongkong.

Hongkong industrialists and exporters already have warn- ed that the Colony's im- mediate economic future is dependent on the terms of Britain's entry into the EEC.

The Vice-Chairman of the Hongkong Exporters' Associa- tion, Mr P. Pecari: comment- ed:

"Many industries have scen the writing on the wall and have endeavoured to cover themselves over the last few years.

"It would have temporary adverse effect...."

Other experts ink many Hongkong firms tould face financial ruin if Britain docs not win enough protection for industries here.

Disclosing this last week, the manager of the com- pany's Hongkong office, Mr T. Takenaka, said: "We received a letter from the consulting engineers for the project, Scott, Wilson, Kirkpatrick & Partners, confirming the award by Government on October 1."

Mr Takenaka attributed the company's success to the fact that "we offered the lowest tender".

The contract, according to Government, requires the construction of 1.25 miles of seawalls and the reclama- tion of about 60 acres of seabed within the walls.

Two years

Mr Takenaka said the work, which will t carried out under the supervision of the consulting engideers, is ex- pected to be completed within two years.

Twenty engineers will be brought from Japan, in ad- dition to about 30 local super- visory staff. "The number of workers will vary according to the progress of the work.”

Mr Takenaka said the com- pany, set up in Hongkong nine years ago, had also secured three contracts from Government for

extending the parking aprons and widening the existing taxiway at Kai Tak.

The company gained similar experience in constructing one runway at Tokyo's inter- national airport.

Completion

Another major contract is expected to be let next year for the construction of the runway and taxiway pave- ments, drainage, fire-fighting facilities and lighting. "The whole project should be com- pleted early in 1973," a Go- vernment spokesman said.

"The cost of the extension had shot up by more than 30 per cent and was now likely to total $150 million, the Governor, Sir David Trench, said in a speech on October 1. The question, however, of who is going to pick up the tab remains open.

The Financial Secretary. Sir John Cowperthwaite, said in his budget speech last February: "Our decision to go ahend with construction does not racep that we shall not continue to press
