towards the end of 1970. While Matsons would

profer to have a ready-made container terminal

made available to them on a rental basis, they

have indicated that they would be prepared, if

development.

(d) American President Lines

American President Lines have now started a

container service from Hong Kong in conventional

ships, and have on order 3 non-self-sustaining

ships which will be brought into service by

January, 1972. These ships are ear-marked for

the U.S. West Coast/Far East trade and will be

operated on a 12-day frequency. While A.P.L.

would prefer not to get involved in the develop-

ment or operation of container terminal facilities,

they have indicated also that they would be

prepared, if necessary, to put up some capital

to develop the proposed facilities.
