Mr Wilthead
I shall have
to ack.
I hereby beg to express my heartiest thanks for your kindness in favour- ing me with a conversation when I visited at your office the other day with 30/Vii Mr. Haruhiko Nishi, Vice-Chairman of The Japan-British Society.
The visit was to give my due respect to the officers in charge of the international bid for construction of the container terminal as the repre- sentative of Kowloon Container Ware-House Co., Ltd. who submitted tender for the project. During the conversation you made several enquiries to me, however due to the fact that I am afraid that my answer to your question might be insufficient, I hereby wish to repeat my answer in writing in order to clarify our stand.

As for the further details about our tender please be so kind to refer to the copy of the document attached to the tender documents I submitted to you at the time of my visit. ·

Our relation with Six Major Shipping Companies in Japan. (Nippon Yusen Kaisha, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Japan Line, Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. Yamashita-Shinnihon Steamship Co., Ltd., Showa Shipping Co., Ltd.)
a) The so-called Six Major Shipping Companies in Japan centralize
their effort at the liner services between the industrially advanced countries and the transportation to secure raw materials for Japan's fundamental industries under the shipping policy of Japanese Government. In fact, since 1951 the vessels for South- east Asian service have been excluded from the vessels built based on the national project. Therefore their share in the shipping services in Southeast Asia is minimal, and especially their share in the liner services is almost negligible with the exception of Japan/Bangkok and Japan/Saigon services. As the investment in new business of the above main business goes on increase, they have nothing in reserve to be interested in Japan/Hongkong route, and therefore their share in the transportation is negligible and they do not need the private container wharf and they are financially unable to share.
