KWAI SHING GOVERNMENT LOW-COST HOUSING ESTATE
First Blocks Ready Next Year
******
The Kwai Shing Government Low-cost Housing Estate is taking shape,
and the first blocks are expected to be completed sometime in 1971.
Situated on Texaco Peninsula, this $70 million estato is the
largest so far planned by the Public Works Department. When completed in
1974, it will house 81,000.
The ostate will consist of 20 multi-storey blocks, eight estate
schools with a total of 192 classrooms for primary and kindergarton, shops,
vegetable markets, playgrounds and carparks.
Construction is being divided into three stages because of the
difficult nature of the site.
The first stage is expected to be completed in 1972. This involves
putting up one seven-storey and three 20-storey blocks capable of
accommodating 12,500, one 24-classroom estate school, three vegetable
markots containing 48 stalls, and shops and administration offices.
Water supply to the estate will be served by the Kwai Chung North
Service Reservoir. With the first blocks now expected to be ready in 1971,
work will start this December on mains connections.
This includes laying about 3,200 feet of 22-inch diameter steal
piping from the main trunk at Wo Yi Hop Road to the estate, and the
installation of valves and other necessary fittings for the supply to fire-
fighting operations and leakage tests.
The work is expected to be completed in six months. The system will
serve as the fresh water trunk-feed both to the estate and nearby areas.
