PUBLIC HOUSING MILESTONE

500th Resettlement Block Next Week

*******

Hong Kong's extensive housing programme will reach another significant

milestone this year when the Public Works Department completes the 500th

resettlement block.

In the brief 16-year history of Hong Kong's resettlement housing

programme, more than a quarter of the total population has been provided with

reasonable income-based accomodation.

Three years ago, Hong Kong rehoused its millionth settler since the

start of the resettlement housing policy in 1954. Today, living accomodation

for some 1,200,000 in 23 resettlement estates has been provided.

It is expected that about 1,370,000 will be living in resettlement

housing by 1974/75.

This spectacular achievement took shape immediately after the disastrous

Shek Kip Mei fire on Christmas Night, 1953. The entire cost of the programme,

totalling more than $750 million, has been net from public funds with no

contribution from any other source.

From two-storey blocks containing simple domestic rooms only, the

Public Works Department has progressively improved the designs to provide

better homes and greater amenities.
