ASSURANCES ON CRIME PREVENTION
Governor Says Everything Will Be Done
The Governor described criminal violence as a problem of modern
timos common to urban environments everywhere but he assured the
community everything possible would be done to strengthen the ability of
the police to combat it.
He told the Legislative Council the police training school would be
enlarged, new stations would be built, a new Criminal Investigation Department
training school would be set up, and more use would be made of scientific
techniques.
He asked the public to understand the limitations and difficulties
of the policeman on the beat, and to co-operate with him. The constable
was the heart of the force, and public co-operation was essential if he was
to provide residents with the protoction they rightly expected.
The Governor said he was disturbed by an increase in sexual assaults,
the prevalence of the weapon-carrying habit, and the greater readiness among
young criminals to use knives and files hastily, needlessly and viciously.
He referred to the clear public support the police had had in their
recent attempts to forestall criminal activity, and the success of such efforts.
While it would be wrong to be unduly optimistic over long-term
results, there was no lack of resolution either on the part of the Commissioner
or members of the force.
