Dear Bunny Вити

Thank you for your letter of 5th February, 1970, about helicopters and visits by R A. F. combat aircraft, both 1970-71 and post 1971. We had already had, through military channels, information on the way things were likely to go.

I was pleased to hear that we were to get the extra helicopters. As to the costs, I note that these are to be covered from Defence votes while the current financial agree- ment is in force, but that the Minister can not agree to any commitment to do this beyond 1971. You will not expect me to do more at this stage than note that the allocation of these costs will fall to be considered in the negotiation of the new financial agreement.

Again I note the points made in relation to visits by combat aircraft after 1971 and have no comment to make at this stage except to agree with the suggestion made in the last sentence of that section of your letter.

As to the 1970-71 visits, I recognize that the Chief of Staffs have done their best in their proposals to meet our needs short of actually stationing aircraft here. You may certainly take it that we accept the proposals and I entirely agree with the points listed at (a) - (d) on the second page of your letter.

I have also received your letter of 6th February (HKK 10/1). You will by now have had my interim, reply to Sir Leslie Monson's letter, written on 2nd February.
