Replacement from UK. A replacement from UK would
have to be provided for the committed battalion to fill the
gap created by the deployment of the spearhead battalion
to Hong Kong.
Deduction
14. We deduce that, despite practical difficulties, it would be
feasible from the military point of view for the two battalions
stationed in Singapore and Brunei to provide between them the
immediate reserve unit for Hong Kong, provided possible political
objections to their use for this purpose can be overcome.
THE FUTURE SIZE OF THE HONG KONG GARRISON
15. In the light of the foregoing discussion, the effects of the
continuing land force presence in Singapore and Brunci on the future
size of the Hong Kong garrison are now examined. There appear
to be two options.
They are:
a.
Option 1. To raise the strength of the garrison
to 7 major units as planned in order to avoid the
practical difficulties and possible political objections.
over double earmarking the battalions in Singapore and
Brunei for reinforcement of Hong Kong.
