ANNEX A to DP 31/70(C) (Draft) (Continued

C.

Replacement from UK. A replacement from the UK would

have to be provided either to fill the gap in Singpaore or

Brunei created by the deployment of the spearhead battalion

to Hong Kong or to maintain the spearhead system should one

of the battalions be committed to a local operation in

Singapore/Malaysia or Brunei.

d.

Training.

The requirement to keep the spearhead

battalion at short notice to move would inhibit training.

This restraint would bear more heavily on the Singapore bat-

talion than on the one in Brunei. As a component of an

ANZUK force, the Singapore battalion would be expected to

adhere to the Force Comander's training programme.

However by carefully arranging the spearhead roster it

should prove possible to overcome this problem.

Deduction

14. We deduce that, despite practical difficulties, it would be

feasible from the military point of view for the two battalions

stationed in Singapore and Brunei tc provide between them the

immediate reserve unit for Hong Kong, provided possible political

objections to their use for this purpose can be overcome.
