ANNEX A to DP 29/70(Revised Final)

FUTURE COMMAND ARRANGEMENTS IN SOUTH EAST ASIA

1.

INTRODUCTION

It is the view of HMG (1) that the purpose of the UK military presence in SE Asia post 1971 will be to contribute, in cooperation with our Commonwalth partners, to stability in the arca by providing a deterrent to external attack on Malaysia and Singapore, and by encouraging the cohesion of local forces. The presence of the ANBUK furces will therefore serve a largely political purpose. Bearing this in mind, as well as the need for economy and the views expressed to the Scar tary of State for Defence by Commonwealth governments, wo have formulated a UK view on a SE Asia command structure for use in further discussions with the other countries

involved.
