KR. CROWSON (FED)

R. LAIRD (HKD)

MR. TESH (DD)

I sent you a copy of Mr. Hibbert's letter to Mr. Wilford No.G3/5 of 6 October about the Ministry of Defence's intention to make the Gurkha Battalion in Brunei dependent upon Hong Kong, and not on the small force in Singapore.

2.

I should be grateful for any comments you may have on what Mr. Hibbert says. Clearly there would have to be over-riding reasons why the Brunei Battalion should not be dependent on Hong Kong before the administrative inconvenience of running it from anywhere else could be acceptable. There might however be a number of ways in which the Battalion could be looked after by the Head- quarters in Hong Kong but not appear publicly to have anything more than a "rations" comection.

Rest.
