Sir Hugh said $2,450,000 had boon provided for outright grants during the acadordic yoar 1969/70 undor the now schomo fro giving financial assistance to university students introduced last September.
Ho said thoso grants were calculated on the basis of a maximuri grant of $2,000 nach for just over 1,200 students, or ono quartor of tho total student body.
Holo For Students
Its purpose was to help students moot tuition foos and other unavoidable exponsos such as books, stationery and equipment.
"In fact, somo 1,800 students rocaivod outright grants for 1969/70
at amounts ranging from just over $100 to the maximum of $2,000. In addition,
a little over $3 million was paid out in interest-free loans, to help moot
living exponsos and hall foos," Sir Hugh told the Council.
This provision had boon calculated on the basis of a quartor of the total student body rocciving a maximum loan of $2,000 for students living at homo, and $4,000 for students in rosidance at the universitios on tho assumption that one quartor of those assisted would bo in rosidonce, !
"In fact, somo 1,500 students have received loans for 1969/70, in amounts ranging from $500 to the maximum of $4,000," ho said.
