central Kowloon for the construction of a luxury hotel for
a price of Hong Kong Dollars 130 million (£8,937,780.-) which
was over 5 times the upset price.
That British firms are at last preparing themselves to
share in this prosperity is evidenced by the increasing number
of British trading Missions now visiting Hong Kong. In this
quarter five Missions came to Hong Kong (the London, Birmingham
and Sheffield Chambers of Commerce, the National Wool Textile
Export Corporation and the Lighting Industry Federation).
seemed to be well satisfied with results achieved which in
some cases resulted in orders running into 7 figures for a
single Mission.

Even Macao is beginning to share this prosperity although
this is largely confined to the tourist industry. One of the
biggest hotel complexes in the Far East is now at last nearing
completion. An order for a bridge to link Macao with Taipa
Island has been placed with a local Chinese firm and the
Macao Electric Company, recently infused with fresh life by
the addition of several new directors, is buying new
generating plant to cope with increased demands.
