The land area of Hong Kong including the New
Territories on the mainland is approximately
400 square miles. In that area lives a population
of approximately four million people.
2. Hong Kong possesses no natural resources and
has, therefore, to rely for a living solely on the
skills of its people in manufacturing the raw
materials it imports from abroad and exporting the
finished article. Unlike countries such as Taiwan
and South Korea, Hong Kong cannot fall back on
agriculture to provide a subsistence economy for its
people in the event that her export trade should
decline.
3. Owing to the large influx of refugees from China
after the Communist take-over in 1949, the population
is unbalanced, over 50 per cent being under 21 years
of age.
Although the birth rate has declined
recently, something like 100,000 new jobs will have
to be provided each year for school leavers coming
into the employment market in the next few years and,
to make this possible, a continued expansion in
production and therefore in exports is essential.
