BILA TEFAL QUESTIONS
Projected State Visit to Japan
25.
Following informal approaches by the Japanese, we
told them in the Spring of 1970, with the concurrence
of the then Prime Minister and The Queen, that Her Majesty
hoped that it might be in accordance with the Emperor's
convenience for Her Majesty and the Duke of Edinburgh to
visit Japan' in the first half of 1972. The Japanese
have accepted this proposal with evident pleasure and
have indicated the dates that would suit them best.
These have not yet been put to the Palace.
26. If the Prime Minister endorses the plan in
principle, it would be appropriate for him to express
appreciation of the Japanese Government's intention to
make this invitation and to add that the Queen and the
Duke of Edinburgh are looking forward to visiting Japan
in the Spring of 1972, though they cannot yet see their
way to deciding on a particular date, In any case the
Royal Family prefer to make no public announcement about
future visits until about twelve months or less before
the expected date.
27. It would be appropriate to add a word of appreci-
ation for the generous arrangements for the Prince of
Hales's unofficial visit to Expo '70 in April.
