Transcript of Press Conference by Professor Ralf Dahırendorf :

The reason for my visit to Japan is two-fold,

first we are presently engaged in negotiations with

Japan about the commercial agreement between the

Buropean Community and Japan and that the stage in

the negotiation that is induced for me to have a

look for myself and see what sort of political

indications are. The other reason is the familiar

the world problem in textile trade is what we are

all concerned with, notably because of the intention

in the United States of having unilateral restrictions

on textile import.

Ques.

Did you have any discussion while you're

here about Britain joining the Common Market with

Hong Kong as an associate territory?

Ans.

I have a lot of questions raised by a

number of people and got quite a lot of information

because we are quite familiar with the problems which

are involved in Britain's joining for a number of

countries and territories, Hong Kong

C

there was nothing new but it was important to be able

to discuss it on the point where this really matters

that's to say at this place. It is too early to say

what the position of Hong Kong is likely to be after

British entry, we still haven't discussed that part

in our negotiations. What you call associated

membership is however a somewhat complicated te:m
