Many thanks for your helpful telegram No.284 about the Hong Kong Aircre ́t "ngineering Company. 'e had our reeting with Clive Jenkirs or 5 Pay as arranged and I am enclosing two copies of a note or that was said. I ar leo enclosing copies of an exchan e of letters between Fr. Becker and Fr. Wakeford. These vereiven to us by Jenkins.
As you will ose, Jenkins fully roccɛnices that a trade dispute over this affair could have serious consequences for us all. At the same time, he has a reputation for tourinese and I A sure you will agree t at we should seek to avoid ar open clash between the čo pary and the new Union over the question of rece nition. we hope that Jonking' further approch to the Geroral Fanager will lead the Company to reconsider their decision on this; but if this fails I trust that the Commissioner of Labour sill be able to bring the two sides together. (Ircidontally we here could have a word with Jon Keswick at the appropriate moment if you think that would help.)
You will alco see from the record that Jenkins raised the questions of equal pay for the Inions' Chinese end expatriate members. Is this likely to raise a question of general applica- tion I should be interested to know, for example, what the situation is in cornercial firms employing expatriates. Do they pay expatriates or different scales, or do expatriates receive standard rates of pay but have special allowances to reet school 400c, leave presagen, etc.. It seems to no that Jenkins may be stirring up a real hornets' nest here.
