Thank you for your letter HKK 5/3 dated 6th May, 1970, the contents of which have been passed on to the Commissioner of Labour.
It may be useful to you to know the latest position on night work for women and this is, briefly, as follows.
Since the scheme was announced over three months ago, enquiries have been received from 13 firms, one of which later informed the Commissioner of Labour in writing that it did not intend to pursue the matter. Of the remaining twelve firms, nine are in the cotton spinning, weaving and dyeing industry and three in the electronics industry. Two out of the nine cotton spinning and weaving firms subsequently made formal applications for permission to operate a night shift for women and the Commissioner of Labour approved these on 7th and 20th March respectively. Neither of them have, in fact, introduced a night shift up to the present. So far therefore, after an initial period of nearly three months, no industrial concerns have actually implemented the scheme.
