NIGHT WORK FOR WOMEN IN INDUSTRIAL UNDERTAKINGS
Statement By Labour Commissioner
The Factories and Industrial Undertakings Regulations prohibit
the employment of adult women aged 18 or more, and young persons between
14 and 17 in industrial undertakings between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.
In the past 20 years, says a Labour Department release issued
today, the Commissioner of Labour has exercised powers given to him
under the Factories and Indusorial Undertakings Ordinance to exempt
selected industrial undertakings from these regulations in such a way
that women supervisors have seen permitted to work at night subject to
certain general conditions..
About 1,000 women supervisors are at present authorized to
work at it. Of these, 368 are employed at any one time in 33 factories.
Last week, the Commissioner of Labour wrote to organizations..........
and firms which had written to him previously on the subject that he was
now prepared to consider applications to extend exemptions to include
adult women produqtion workers as well as women supervisors to holp
alleviate the shortage of production workers.
